Best raw/deep techno production resources (free)

September 13, 2024

Electronic music producers who want to learn the craft today are already several steps ahead of those from earlier times, as the internet is full of valuable and free resources that can significantly help in progressing. What had to be painstakingly learned and self-taught back then can now be acquired much faster thanks to dedicated content creators who provide valuable knowledge online. However, with so much content available on the internet today, it can be overwhelming. That’s why I’ve put together a concise summary of what I believe are the highest-quality, free production resources for raw/deep techno currently available on YouTube to help techno producers get started.

Oscar Underdog

First, I have to mention Oscar from Underdog electronic music school, who provides incredibly valuable and well-explained content through his YouTube channel and electronic music school. I haven’t personally taken his paid courses, so I can’t comment on those, but I’m sure they are just as good as the content he offers on YouTube. Anyone looking to start with techno production should definitely take the time to explore his YouTube channel as he guides producers through the process from the beginning  to some very intermediate concepts and approaches.

Mordio

Next, I’d like to recommend Mordio. His approach is somewhat unique and more focused on sound design, but it still offers immense value for anyone starting with electronic music production and intermediate producers. Especially for out-of-the-box approaches and creating spaced-out soundscapes, his content is unbeatable. Be sure to check it out.

Setaoc Mass track breakdown

Third, I’d like to recommend a specific video that helped me immensely in understanding and grasping the basics of production. Particularly if you listen to the track by Setaoc Mass and then watch his track breakdown, it provides valuable insight into the working methods of a top-tier producer.

Lucas Marchal

Next, I’d like to recommend the YouTube channel from Lucas Marchal. This channel is fantastic for more advanced producers considering diving into hardware and modular synthesis. Unlike the other resources, Lucas Marchal primarily uses hardware. As a result, you need to be somewhat more advanced to replicate the techniques in Ableton or your DAW of choice. Nevertheless, it’s a highly recommended YouTube channel and techno artist.

Telekom electronic beats Tech talks

The Tech Talk series by Telekom Electronic Beats is an extremely interesting technical resource because it features a wide range of artists and provides at least a small insight into their working methods, studio setups, and philosophies. The series not only covers established electronic music producers but also introduces relatively fresh faces from the scene, offering a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look.

Module Exchange

Last on the list, I’d like to recommend the Module Exchange channel, which features very interesting talks as well as techno production masterclasses from artists like Arthur Robert and Christoph Faust just to name a few. It’s definitely worth checking out!
